PDF and import

Import documents

Bring in PDF and IDML content and read the import report.

Import gives you a starting point from an existing PDF or an InDesign IDML package. The result should be reviewed before it becomes a production template.

Import a PDF

Choose File → Import → PDF. InkSmith reads the pages and converts supported content into editable text, image, shape, and form elements. PDF import requires Standard or Pro.

PDFs can contain drawing commands, fonts, and structures that do not map cleanly to the editor. If content is skipped or changed, the import report records the known loss. Check the first and last pages, placed images, text spacing, and any forms before saving.

Import an IDML package

Choose File → Import → IDML with a Pro entitlement. IDML carries page items, stories, styles, and links from InDesign. InkSmith creates editable document nodes for supported items and reports unresolved links or flattened content.

Keep linked images beside the IDML package when possible. Files outside the import folder are not read automatically by the default safe link policy. If an image is missing, the report identifies the link so you can resolve it.

Read the import report

After a successful import, the report shows page and object counts plus every reported warning, flattened item, missing link, or discarded feature. Choose Copy report to save the details for review. Close it to edit the document, and reopen it from File → Last import report or the home screen while the app remains open.

Important: An import report with no reported issues is a good start, not a promise of pixel-perfect reconstruction. Compare the imported document with its source before relying on it.

Save the result

Make changes in the editor, then save a new portable .inks template. Preview and export a PDF to compare layout and pagination with the original.
